Rome Fiumicino Airport is the Best in Europe. This is the sixth time since 2018.

Fiumicino, 4th July 2024. Rome Fiumicino Airport is the Best in Europe for the sixth time in the last seven years, in the category of airports serving over 40 million passengers. The winners were announced yesterday evening in Istanbul by the international trade association ACI (Airport Council International) Europe at the General Assembly, during which European airports that have achieved excellence in various fields are awarded every year. Evaluations were carried out by an independent jury, composed by 6 leading institutional and technical figures operating in the European aviation sector. 'Leonardo da Vinci' Airport - which shares this year's award with iGA Istanbul International Airport - also won the 'Digital Transformation Award' for its commitment to digitisation and the promotion of innovation to offer an increasingly high-quality passenger experience.
Increasingly 'digital, reliable, data-driven and sustainable': this is how the jury of experts described Rome Fiumicino Airport, which is managed by Aeroporti di Roma - a Mundys Group company. Fiumicino airport thus consolidates its European primacy, obtained by winning the 'Best Airport Award' in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023.
Specifically, the evaluation criteria highlighted ADR's commitment to operations and customer experience; the development of new 'green' infrastructures and the Skytrax 5-Star airport's commitment to be a 'Careport', promoting an increasingly sustainable airport that takes care of people and the local area; the promotion of innovation as a driver for the sector's development, including the design and planning of new modes of transport.
"I am proud of the new European award received by Rome Fiumicino airport, recognising the excellence and quality of the services offered every day to thousands of passengers, as well as the investments in sustainability and digitalization" said Aeroporti di Roma's Chairman, Vincenzo Nunziata. "This recognition is a further demonstration of the commitment of our company, which aims at contributing to the growing consolidation of the attractiveness, as well as the tourist and economic growth, of our country on a global scale."
"To receive ACI Europe's Best European Airport award for the sixth time is a source of great pride and satisfaction, further confirming that we are guiding our development in the right direction, thanks to the work and passion of all our people and the entire airport community," Marco Troncone, Aeroporti di Roma's CEO, commented. "Achieving this result ex-aequo with the brand-new Istanbul airport, as well as receiving the Digital Transformation Award, motivates us even more to reflect on the future. If, today, Fiumicino Airport can optimally manage the strong increase in traffic, it is thanks to a vision that has led us, even at hard times, to implement substantial investments - i.e., EUR 2.5 billion over the last 10 years (about 50% of the resources invested in the same period by the entire Italian airport sector); now, it is crucial to maintain this development pace so as to keep competing at the level of the largest global hubs and be ready for the further growth in passengers expected in coming years."
It is thanks to the latest, significant investments to adopt the most innovative technologies to improve the safety, efficiency, and environmental impact of its processes that ADR also won the 'Digital Transformation Award', competing with Zurich (Switzerland) and Ljubljana (Slovenia) airports, and repeating the success of 2021. This award, promoted by SESAR Joint Undertaking in collaboration with ACI EUROPE, recognised Aeroporti di Roma's commitment to the implementation of digital transformation through the promotion of dedicated physical spaces, such as the Innovation Hub in Terminal, the collaboration with stakeholders, the projects implemented and the benefits brought to Fiumicino Airport in terms of operational efficiency, costs, safety, capacity and environment, in the context of the company's Open Innovation model.
As an evidence of Rome's strong attractiveness, in recent weeks Rome Fiumicino airport has been recording a 20% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same period in 2023; on June 23 (Sunday), a new historical record was reached for passengers transiting through the airport in a single day, with over 173 thousand passengers.
