Fairmont State announces presidential speaker series; Newly established Civics Institute to support fall programming

As part of President Mike Davis's vision for Fairmont State University to be a "Great Place to Learn," the University has established the Presidential Speaker Series. Covering politics, economics, healthcare, science, the environment, and the arts, speakers will address topics that impact the entire Falcon community. The theme for Fall 2024 is Civic Dialogues, exploring the importance of an informed and engaged electorate to American Democracy.

The inaugural speaker will be Dr. Christopher Phillips on Wednesday, September 25 at 6 p.m. in the Wallman Hall Theater. His presentation is titled "Building Bridges of Mutual Understanding in a World of Walls" and is open to the public. This will be followed by a fireside chat-style question and answer session with President Davis and a reception. While on campus, Phillips will also visit classes on government and communication, share meals with students and faculty, and meet with student leaders.

Phillips is an American author, educator, consultant, lecturer, and democracy advocate. His work revolves around the Socratic Method, a teaching technique developed by Greek philosopher Socrates. Phillips is best known for his book, "Socrates Cafe."

"I like to ask members of our Fairmont State University community to think critically about what type of society we want to live in," said Davis. "So, to kick off our fall series we have chosen an expert on critical thinking, Dr. Christopher Phillips. During his time with us he will offer a valuable approach to foster engaging discussions that promote democratic principles. Dr. Phillips is the ideal person to commence this speaker series, particularly as we approach the November election."

Phillips holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from the College of William & Mary. He earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Montclair State University and studied at the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children. He received a Master of Arts in Humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and a Master of Science in Natural Sciences from Delta State University. Phillips also earned a Ph.D. in Communications from Edith Cowan University in Australia.

The fall speaker series will be supported by Fairmont State's newly established Civics Institute. Dr. Samantha Godbey was recently announced as Director. "Our mission is to foster a deeper understanding of civic duties and to encourage active participation in democratic processes," said Godbey. "We aim to equip both students and community members with the resources needed to be informed, responsible, and engaged citizens."
