VENTURA, Calif., - A new art exhibition called "Fluid Moments: The Art of Surf" by local artist Brett Bednorz, known as Zrondeb, is available for public viewing until August 23, 2024, at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center in Ventura, CA. In conjunction with this exhibition, the public is also invited to attend a special event Tuesday, August 20th at 7:00 pm which will feature a moderated discussion with artist Brett Johnson and a presentation by social-ecological researcher Dr. Jennifer Selgrath who will discuss her research on ocean access and environmental justice in California.
The work of local Artist, Brett Bednorz, depicts the Channel Islands and Ventura coastline in a dazzling array of color and texture. His work evokes images of the coastal landforms, waves, clouds, and sky that are at once iconic and otherworldly. He has observed firsthand the ocean's many color changes, wave formations, cloud perspectives, and water reflections. As a graphic designer he has worked with many mediums including metal, mixed media, and painting on canvas. The works on display are dedicated to Ventura County's local beaches and views of the majestic Channel Islands.
Dr. Jennifer Selgrath is a social-ecological researcher with the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary's science team. Her work focuses on human dimensions of the ocean, including ocean access, historical ecology, climate impacts, cultural benefits, environmental justice, and deep-sea coral habitats.
This exhibition is part of a new program called "Art in the Park" at Channel Islands National Park which offers opportunities for a new method of engagement between parks, artists, and visitors. Art and artists are important to understanding societies collective history. They provide lenses and pathways to see and learn about our landscapes, promote stewardship, and be effective in inspiring change and conservation.
