Foundation Hosts Open House to Celebrate 15th Anniversary of RHRW

The Reading Hospital Foundation hosted an Open House for staff and community members to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Reading Hospital Rehabilitation at Wyomissing.

Kelley Crozier, M.D., leads the region's only accredited rehabilitation hospital, which employs nearly 600 people. Dedicated staff at RHRW provide specialized inpatient and outpatient services primarily to patients who have lost functional abilities due to injuries, illnesses, or accidents.

When Katherine Thornton visits Reading Hospital Rehabilitation at Wyomissing, she always stops by the Healing Garden before entering the building. The spacious garden, which now includes a putting green, whimsical sculptures, and rows of greenery and colorful flowers, was the first project funded by the Reading Hospital Foundation.

"It's a full-circle moment for me," said Thornton, longtime president of the foundation. "Thousands of patients and their families have enjoyed this relaxing space; it's a special reminder ofhow far we've come and how far our donors' generous support spans."

In addition to staff-guided tours, the Open House included live demonstrations of the state-of-the-art equipment and services funded by the foundation, including a patient walking with the assistance of an exoskeleton; a patient using the bionic arm to play computerized air hockey; and a Parkinson's patient showcasing how she improves movement and mobility through Rock Steady Boxing. Visitors also had the opportunity to seethe Healing Garden, which, serves as a place to get fresh air, and is used for therapy sessions.

"Everything our patients might need is right here, all under one roof," said Dr. Crozier, medical director of the rehab hospital, offering support groups and wellness programming. "This facility was specially designed to help our patients regain independence so they can feel healthy and confident."
