Inmate Death at Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center

On Sunday, November 17, 2024, a 72-year-old male inmate housed at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center appeared to have had a medical emergency and collapsed in the 448-North Medical Corridor near the Joseph Kievernagel Facility. Deputies arrived moments later and attempted life-saving measures until the Cosumnes Fire Department arrived. Unfortunately, the inmate was ultimately pronounced deceased by fire personnel.

The Sheriff's Office will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner's Office will release the name of the deceased per their protocols.
