INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK, Ind.: On Sunday, November 3, enjoy stories and songs about Great Lakes shipwrecks from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Join a ranger and musician Lee Murdock for a program and live concert called, "Gales of November - Great Lakes Shipwrecks" that focuses on what makes the storms so treacherous in the month of November and the historic shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. This program is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of Indiana Dunes.
After the short program, join musician Lee Murdock as he entertains with ballads of contemporary commerce and revelry in the grand folk style. Lee's songs about the Great Lakes find drama and inspiration in the lives of sailors and fishermen, lighthouse keepers, ghosts, shipwrecks, outlaws, and everyday heroes. For more information, or to support the Friends of Indiana Dunes go to: dunefriends.org.
There are approximately 6,000 shipwrecks throughout the Great Lakes, and many were never located. However, some wrecks, like that of the Muskegon, which is Indiana's first shipwreck listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are located nearby. As a new state nature preserve, the Muskegon shipwreck site will be protected for generations to come.
The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 North State Road 49, about one mile north of Interstate 94. For more information on Indiana Dunes National Park, call 219-395-1882, visit our website, download the official National Park Service app, or view our Facebook page.
