Ramthun honored with Outstanding Woman of Color Award

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will recognize Helen Ramthun, who is pursuing her Master of Science in Supply Chain Managementat UW-Platteville, as the 2024 recipient of the Outstanding Woman of Color Award. The Outstanding Woman of Color Award recognizes women of color who have shown passion for their work, outstanding university and community service and dedication to creating an inclusive and respectful environment.

Ramthun, who was born in Kenya, earned her undergraduate degree in economics from Macalester College, in Minnesota, as a college exchange student. She served in the US military and was honorably discharged as an Airman in the US Navy in 2001. She has worked for the State of Wisconsin and nonprofit organizations serving the public and people of Wisconsin since 2009, with her current role as a museum clerk for the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Living near Platteville, Ramthun was looking for an online graduate degree when she started her program during the COVID-19 pandemic. "It seemed like a good fit during that time," said Ramthun. "[My experience] has been great. The reputation of UW-Platteville being a good school is true, and I like that I can work during the day and come home to do homework during the night."

Ramthun says working for the government has been a rewarding experience. She enjoys servicing the public and helping the community and hopes to remain working in the government sector or a nonprofit organization, possibly as a supply chain analyst or in management, after earning her graduate degree.

Ramthun said she is happy, delighted and greatly humbled to have been chosen for this award.
