Forging the future of cybersecurity

At The University of Akron (UA), the School of Disaster Science and Emergency Services is rapidly advancing in cybersecurity education thanks to our dynamic program, which emphasizes both cybersecurity training and workforce development.

Stanley Smith

Stanley Smith, professor of practice in Cyber Forensics and Cyber Range Regional Programming Center Coordinator, plays a pivotal role in the School of Disaster Science and Emergency Services. Recently two grants were secured to enhance digital forensics and workforce development initiatives. These grants are fueling the development of new educational modules and tools, particularly focusing on mobile forensics and digital evidence collection.

The Ohio Cyber Range, comparable to a law enforcement shooting range but for cybersecurity, provides a virtual environment where students can practice skills like penetration testing and ethical hacking. This hands-on experience is crucial for preparing students for the fast-evolving field of cybersecurity.

Interest in cybersecurity at UA has surged, with the institution being one of the first public universities in Ohio to offer specialized programs. Smith credits the influx of students to the university's unique approach, which includes cyber camps and workshops that reach beyond traditional college students to engage high schoolers and underserved communities.

Smith notes the impact these programs have had on local high school students. Many who attended UA's cyber camps have gone on to attend UA from their positive experiences at the high school camps.

"Students who participate in our cyber camps discover the power of cyber forensics, fundamentals of basic networking and digital investigations where every digital artifact leads to a digital story," stated Smith.

UA's proactive and inclusive approach to cybersecurity education is shaping the future of the field, ensuring that students are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the fast-changing digital world.

Middle and High School teachers can schedule a cyber camp at their school or a planned visit to the Cyber Range at UA. Our cyber camps offer hands-on experience in cyber forensics, basic networking fundamentals, coding and cybersecurity.
