From Server to Client: New Rambus DRR5 Chip Offering for High-Performance PCs

Today marks another exciting milestone in the Rambus DDR5 journey with the news that we have just launched a DDR5 Client Clock Driver (CKD) for next-generation desktops and notebooks.

The Rambus DDR5 CKD and SPD Hub are part of a new client memory interface chip offering that brings server technology advancements to the client market.

We recently talked to John Eble, VP Product Marketing for Memory Interface Chips at Rambus, to find out more about the chips that are needed for high-performance PCs.

Key Takeaways on DDR5 for Client Systems:

  • AI is driving ever-increasing performance demands for higher bandwidth and greater capacity memory in client systems.
  • Client systems are set to scale to DDR5 6400 Megatransfers per second (MT/s) memory modules with new platform launches coming this fall.
  • At DDR5 6400 MT/s and above, an on-module CKD is required on new client DIMMs: CUDIMMs and CSODIMMs.
  • The CKD enables CUDIMMs and CSODIMMs to operate at state-of-the-art data rates of up to 7200 MT/s.
  • The CKD buffers the clock between the host CPU and the memory devices on the memory module and ensures the signal integrity of the clock at high frequency.
  • Rambus is renowned for its power integrity and signal integrity expertise and is leveraging this experience to deliver high-quality memory interface chips to the client market.
