24th Street to Close at Railroad Crossing Oct. 7; Sidewalk To Be Connected on North Side

All lanes of 24th Street will close at the 24th Street railroad crossing on Monday, Oct. 7, weather permitting, to remove and replace approaches to the railroad tracks. This closure is coordinated with the Union Pacific Railroad and is anticipated to last two weeks. Additionally, the railroad crossing will be extended north by Union Pacific Railroad to connect the sidewalk on the north side of the crossing. The south shared-use path will be completed before Oct. 7, and available for use.

A detour route will direct motorists on 24th Street north to Bloomington Road and Grand Avenue. West of the railroad track, 24th Street will remain open and accessible from Stange Road for motorists. There be no detour required for cyclists or pedestrians as the shared-use path along 24th Street and at the railroad crossing will remain open.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time as delays are expected. The City of Ames has contracted with Con-Struct for the reconstruction of Stange Road and 24th Street. Stange Road was completed in 2023 while 24th Street has been reconstructed in three main stages. This is the final stage of this project.
