CSUB receives national recognition for English, criminal justice programs

California State University, Bakersfield has been recognized for having some of the best degree programs in the nation.

Degree Choices ranked CSUB No. 3 in its list of Best Colleges for English Majors as part of its 2025 Best Colleges report. The university was also ranked No. 14 in Best Colleges for Criminal Justice and No. 19 in Best Nursing Schools.

The company also list CSUB as No. 25 out of more than 180 schools in its Best Colleges in the West rankings.

Degree Choices is a company that provides career and financial advice to prospective students. The goal of its Best Colleges rankings is to help students determine whether they will receive a good return on their educational investment.

Degree Choices primarily used data from two U.S. Department of Education programs - the College Scorecard and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System - to determine its rankings.

The data is used to measure how long it takes the average student to pay back their school costs and how those costs compare to the earnings they can expect after leaving school. They also compare student earnings across different schools.

The university has received high rankings from other outlets this year, including:

• No. 16 in Top Public Schools in the West by the U.S. News and World Report.
• No. 14 in Best Bang for the Buck: West by Washington Monthly.
• No. 20 nationwide in Education Reform Now's 2023 Social Mobility Elevator rankings.

CSUB was also rated CSUB 4.5 out of 5 stars in Money Magazine's 2024 Best Colleges in America rankings.
