Building Demolition to Launch Development of Kent City Park and Playground, Paving the Way for Future Projects

Grand Rapids, MI (October 8, 2024) - Kent County's Community Action, in partnership with Tyrone Township, is excited to announce the demolition of an abandoned building in Tyrone Township. The demolition occurred on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the building site located at 106 N Main Street in Kent City.

The demolition will clear the way for the future development of a public park, green space, and the proposed new Kent City Library. Constructed in 1955, the building has been vacant for more 8 years, and its removal marks the first step in revitalizing the area for the entire community's benefit.

"Tyrone Township is committed to creating vibrant public spaces that enhance community life," said Dave Ignasiak, Tyrone Township Supervisor. "This demolition marks a crucial step toward transforming the area that will serve the needs and aspirations of future generations."

The demolition and revitalization of the area were supported by $300,000 in funding from Kent County's Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), along with matching funds provided by Tyrone Township.

Kent County receives federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant Program to support programs and infrastructure improvements benefiting low- to moderate-income households. Through CDBG, the County can offer direct assistance via Home Rehabilitation and Public Service Programs, focusing on areas with higher concentrations of these households. Municipal partners can propose projects through an annual process that directly benefits low- to moderate-income individuals.

"We are excited to support this project to help our northern residents, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunities this project will bring to the Kent City community," said Gustavo Perez, Kent County Community Action Director. "Our Community Development Block Grant program is an invaluable resource, helping residents and local governments transform spaces for future generations."

Tyrone Township partnered with Pitsch Demolition Company to carry out the demolition.
