Erica N. Johnson, MD, FACP, FIDSA, Named ABIM Senior Vice President for Academic and Medical Affairs

Philadelphia, July 18, 2024 -- Erica N. Johnson, MD, FACP, FIDSA, has been named the new Senior Vice President for Academic and Medical Affairs at ABIM. Dr. Johnson spent the last nine years as the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore and is also Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious disease.

In her new role, Dr. Johnson will lead relationships with the graduate medical education (GME) community in internal medicine and its subspecialties. She will also coordinate ABIM's discipline-specific governance through the work of the ABIM Council, Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees in internal medicine and its 20 subspecialties.

"Dr. Johnson is an innovative leader with extensive experience working with medical residents and the patient population in Baltimore," said Furman McDonald, MD, MPH, incoming President and CEO of ABIM and the ABIM Foundation. "Her creative leadership at Hopkins Bayview led to impressive increases in the number-and retention-of URIM [underrepresented in medicine] residents and the creation of community engagement programs that enhanced public trust in physicians. She is uniquely qualified to strengthen ABIM's understanding of medical education and the physician community and I look forward to her insights."

Dr. Johnson is a voting member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Review Committee for Internal Medicine (RC-IM), where she gained a deep understanding of GME accreditation as well as certification. In her new position, she will serve as ABIM's ex officio member on the RC-IM. She is also a member of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) Survey and Scholarship Committee for the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM).

She began her career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where she served as the associate program director for the internal medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship programs in the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. She also served as a clinical investigator with the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program. She completed her distinguished 11-year military career, which included a deployment in Afghanistan, in 2014 when she joined Hopkins Bayview.

"I look forward to continuing to partner with the GME community and the diplomate community in identifying the important trends in medical education and the healthcare workforce, and coming up with innovative ways to respond to those needs, with the goal of continuing to meet our professional commitment to each other and to the public. I also see this as a new opportunity to carry on the important work at the intersection of justice and health that I am fortunate to do in Baltimore every day with the residents, faculty and staff of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program."

Dr. Johnson currently serves as the chair of the ABIM Infectious Disease Board and is a member of the ABIM Council and Board of Directors. She will begin her new position with ABIM on October 1, 2024.
