Become a Raleigh Firefighter - Applications Due Sept. 2

The Raleigh Fire Department is moving towards a continuous hiring cycle, with fire academies beginning in January and June.

The last day to apply for the January 2025 Raleigh Fire Academy is Sept. 2. Applications received after Sept. 2 will be considered for the June 2025 Academy.

Becoming a firefighter for the City of Raleigh is a highly-competitive process. Raleigh Fire receives applications from men and women of varying backgrounds and experiences and as a result, the department is a diverse group of people from across North Carolina and the United States.

The starting salary for a firefighter is $51,194.

Fire Academy Candidate Requirements

Candidates are required to meet the rigorous physical and mental demands of the job, but no previous firefighting experience is required.

Candidates must:

  • be at least 18 years old at the time they apply;
  • have a high school diploma or equivalent (proof required);
  • have corrected vision of at least 20/30 in both eyes; and,
  • have a valid driver's license.
