Typically on the even years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics releases data analysis on the characteristics of residents and users of multiple types of post-acute care. The data are aggregated from the National Post-acute Long-term Care study.

The data in the August 2024 brief demonstrate that the COVID dip in occupancy in assisted living is rebounding with more than a million individuals using assisted living on a daily average in 2022. Additionally, more than half of residents were over 85 years of age and 60% of residents need support with three or more activities of daily living. Medicaid remains a payer for a nominal percentage of residents. It is estimated that Medicaid has paid for part of the services rendered to about 17% of assisted living residents.
