Shell's clean-up effort of oil leak has been completed

  • What is known about the incident?

There was an oil leak from a land-based pipeline, which occurred at approximately 5.30 am (SGT) on October 20, 2024, at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore on Bukom. We are investigating the cause of the incident.

  • When and where did it happen?

The oil leak occurred at approximately 5.30am (SGT) on October 20, 2024, from a land-based pipeline at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore on Bukom.

  • What caused the incident?

An investigation into the incident is being conducted and Shell will continue to cooperate and work closely with the relevant authorities on this matter.

  • What injuries/fatalities have occurred?

No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

  • How much oil has spilled?

The source of the oil spill is from a land-based pipeline. The oil was spilled into a holding area but unfortunately, some overflowed into the water channel between Bukom Besar Island and Bukom Kechil Island. We estimate that approximately 30-40 metric tonnes of slop, which is a mixture of oil and water, was leaked into the sea.

  • How was the oil leak stopped?

We identified the source of the leak and took the needed steps to stop further leakage of oil from the pipeline.

  • What oil has spilled?

It is slop, which is a mixture of oil and water.

  • How long did it take to contain the leak?

The oil leak occurred at approximately 5.30 am (SGT) on October 20, 2024, and was stopped at around 3pm.

  • Why did Shell inform MPA about the incident at only 1pm?

The oil leak was initially contained within land, but when it was detected that the oil had leaked into the sea, we then informed MPA as soon as practicable.

  • What kind of clean-up action took place?

Our clean-up effort has been completed. During the clean-up, we had deployed containment booms, absorbent booms, anti-pollution crafts, sprayed dispersant, performed propeller washing, water flushing and jetting. We also worked closely with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore who also deployed craft equipped with dispersants to assist.

  • Any updates you can share on the status of the clean-up?

We took steps to ensure we are as thorough as possible in our clean-up effort. We can confirm that our clean-up of the channel between Bukom Besar and Kechil Islands near the original source of the oil leak has been completed on October 29, 2024.
