Heavy Rain Expected Tonight, Tomorrow Morning, Avoid Flash Flooding

Anyone living or visiting in the City of Madison should be aware and avoid any flooded area. Heavy rain is expected to move through the region and has the potential to create flash flooding. Some streets may flood temporarily.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch in effect from 10 p.m., Aug. 5, 2024 (tonight) until Aug. 6, 2024 (Tuesday morning). While the heavy rain forces the City's storm sewer to capacity and causes temporary flash flooding in specific areas of the City. At this time this event is not considered a major flooding event.

Please do not drive, walk or travel in any flooded streets or washed out paths. Flooded areas may be deeper than they appear, and as little as six inches of water can knock an adult off their feet.

Depending on the specifics of the storm, flash flooding can occur at a number of areas throughout the City. Some locations that are prone to flash flooding include:

• University/Midvale
• Mineral Point Rd. near Gammon
• Mifflin/Livingston
• E. Johnson/Third
• E. Johnson/Sixth
• Hoard/Sixth
• Sherman/Trailsway
• Odana/Grand Canyon
• Aberg/Packers

While lake levels remain elevated, we don't anticipate that to have a significant impact on the potential flash flooding associated with the forecasted storms. Engineering crews have been out clearing debris from storm sewers and grates in priority areas. Once the rainfall ends, we would expect most street areas to drain within a few hours.
