By Andrea O'Neill '06Roger Holt was one of 35 employers who represented their school district at the latest Collaborating to Assist Teacher Candidate Hiring (CATCH) Conference as part of the Education and American Sign Language Career Expo.
As Director of Human Resources for the Caesar Rodney School District, Holt says that one of the things they look for the most in potential candidates is professional confidence and communication, and the students he spoke with during the expo exemplified those characteristics. Holt recalls being impressed with how well students advocated for themselves and were able to articulate the vision they had for their professional careers, including one student who immediately accepted his invitation to visit the school and the community to see if it was a good fit before moving forward with the application process.
"The students were exceptional and clearly communicated their career goals," said Holt. They advocate for themselves in professional dialogue, which is what k12 needs."
Holt also appreciated the apparent preparation the students had gone through to engage and confidently communicate with potential employers.
"It was good to see that confidence and communication as a trend among the young folks I talked to that day," recalled Holt, who says that he is still in direct communication with the nearly 40 students he spoke to at the expo.
Caesar Rodney S.D. is a medium-sized district in Delaware that covers three counties and educates 8200 students across fourteen buildings. Holt says that he often emphasizes the school and community pride that is such a big part of school culture, as well as the ability to focus on student success while maintaining the feel of a small town. Holt says a culture like that at Caesar Rodney makes new teachers feel supported and comfortable with their transition.
"Our culture is very family-oriented, said Holt. "Teachers, administrators, para-professionals, and custodians all share the same pride and will go out of their way to be helpful."
All that, of course, with students in mind.
"Our superintendent's vision is student success and achievement, and we want to ensure educators have the support they need to deliver high-quality instruction to students."
