Community invited to register plantings for Million Trees project

With just over five years to go till 2029, the call is out for people who have planted seedlings, shrubs and trees to register them with the Million Trees Project.

Since the project began in 2011, more than 525,000 plantings have been counted.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said greening the City region has been a community aspiration for many years.

"Following a series of World Cafés held in 2010, where the community told us greening the City region would make it a better place to live by 2029, we launched the Million Trees Project and have been keeping track of plantings ever since," he said.

"However, if we are going to meet the 1 million trees by then we need everyone who has planted trees and seedlings in the City region during the last 14 years to register them with the project if you haven't already done so.

"Planting trees leaves a lasting legacy for our future generations. Help us make every tree count."

Every year, up to 25,000 local providence seedlings and trees grown by Community Nursery volunteers are planted in our parks, bushland and coastal reserves by community groups, schools, local business and City staff. All of which are counted towards the project.

All native and non-native perennial plants (plants that live more than two years) including trees that produce food, are decorative and even ground cover plants can be registered.
