Traffic Control for Ellis Harbor Fireworks
The Cedar Boat Club will be holding a Fireworks Display on Wednesday, July 3, from dusk to 1 hour after dusk. This year, a "No Parking/Tow Away" zone will be enforced on the following streets from 1:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. on the day of the event, per Municipal Code Sections 61.094 and 61.094A.

  • Ellis Road NW from 18th Street NW to 26th Street NW (south side)
  • Ellis Blvd NW from Ellis Park South Entrance Road, to approximately 1500' northwesterly (both sides)

C Avenue NE Roadway Improvements to Begin Monday
Effective Monday, July 1st, C Avenue NE will be closed to thru traffic between 19th Street and 20th Street as roadway improvements begin. Access to properties will be maintained during prep work. The road will be closed to all traffic the day of paving operations, with closures remaining overnight to allow for asphalt to cure. Forest Drive SE Closed Effective Today
Effective today, Friday, June 14th, Forest Drive SE will be closed between Thompson Drive and Cottage Grove Avenue as roadway improvements continue. Work is expected to take two (2) weeks. Access to Washington High School and Bethany Lutheran Church will be maintained from side streets. Details on this project can be found HERE.

2nd Avenue Bridge over Cedar River Closed to Thru Traffic Beginning June 17th
Effective Monday, June 17th, the 2nd Avenue Bridge over the Cedar River will be closed to thru traffic from 1st Street SW to 1st Street SE for construction of a floodgate on the east side of the river. Existing on-street parking will remain available on the bridge with access from 1st Street SW, and thru traffic will be detoured to 1st Avenue or 3rd Avenue.

Access to Mays Island, including Veterans Memorial Building and underground parking, will remain open via 1st Street SW. Pedestrians will still have access from the Mays Island parking structure to 1st Street SE through most stages of construction.

3rd Avenue SE Closure Beginning Downtown Monday
Effective Monday, June 10, 3rd Avenue SE will be closed between 1st Street and 2nd Street for crane operations. Work is expected to take three (3) weeks. Local traffic to seek an alternate route.

Intersection of Wilson Avenue and Bowling Street to be Closed for Construction Beginning June 6th
Aiming to finish intersection improvements by the end of July, the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Bowling Street SW is set to be closed beginning Thursday, June 6th.

This work is part of the Bowling Street SW Trail project. Along with converting the intersection to a roundabout, the project features new street lighting, storm sewer, and water main replacement, as well as new trail construction.

By closing the entire intersection, crews will be able to shorten how long traffic and nearby businesses will be affected. Detours for those businesses will be posted, as well as detours for through traffic, which includes use of C Street and 41st Street SW for quick access north and south of the construction work.

27th Avenue SW Over I-380 to Close Monday for Deck Overlay Project
Beginning Monday, June 10, 27th Avenue SW will be closed over I-380 between 3rd Street and L Street SW as the Iowa Department of Transportation begins a deck overlay project. Traffic to seek an alternate route. Work is expected to take approximately two (2) months. 35th St NE from Oakland Rd to Ave Ave Construction Update | June 28th
Temporary seeding is being placed for now between approximately 1111 35th St and Eastern Ave as all driveways and sidewalks are installed and everything has been backfilled with dirt and graded. Sod will be placed late in August when temperatures are typically cooler.

Sanitary Sewer work is complete between Eastern Ave and G Ave and storm sewer installation is nearing completion. The north half of the roadway is being prepared to new pavement as they install the utilities. Next week, storm sewer work will continue between Eastern Ave and G Ave, along with pavement removal and preparation on the south half for new pavement.

Current Traffic Impacts:

  • 35th St is closed to thru traffic for the duration of the project.
  • Access will be maintained to residents within each stage as long as possible during utility work.
  • Full closures at each stage are required for the roadway work.

Turn Restrictions at Mt. Vernon Road and West Leg of 19th Street to Begin Monday
Effective Monday, June 10, 2024, right in/right out traffic will only be permitted at the west leg of 19th Street SE at Mt. Vernon Road (left turns prohibited). The east leg of 19th Street will remain closed at Mt. Vernon Road, as traffic continues to run head-to-head in the north lanes. This traffic pattern is expected to be in place approximately three (3) weeks.

Overnight Lane Reductions to Continue on Highway 30 Sunday Night
Beginning Sunday night, June 2nd, alternating lane reductions will be in place overnight on Highway 30 between Edgewood Road and 6th Street SW as the Iowa Department of Transportation continues to perform roadway improvements. Paving operations will take place at times on the ramps in this area, but the ramps will always remain open to traffic. Work is expected to take approximately six (6) weeks. Roads Under I-380 Overpass at Cedar River to be Closed Beginning May 28
In an effort to build better protection from flooding, several road closures will take place underneath the I-380 overpass of the Cedar River beginning May 28th. E Avenue and F Avenue will be closed from 1st Street NW to 1st Street NE for the construction of two roadway flood gates on the east side of the river. A detour will be posted on the 1st Avenue Bridge.

Additionally, I-380 southbound Exit 20A will be reduced to one lane, with a left turn only onto 1st Street NE. Residents are encouraged to use alternate exits to reach downtown.

16th Ave Bridge of Lions, 16th Ave SE from 2nd St to 4th St, and 3rd St SE east of 16th Ave Construction Update | July 1st
16th Ave/3rd St SE Roadway Improvements
Current work on 3rd Street includes placing and shaping material in the shoulder areas between the sidewalk and curb, and placing temporary erosion control measures until sod can be placed this fall. 3rd Street will remain fenced off for safety until work is completed.

After the Independence Day holiday, reconstruction of storm sewer, water main, pavement and sidewalk at the intersection of 16th Avenue and 3rd Street will begin. This work is expected to take approximately one month. This work area will be surrounding by temporary fencing for pedestrian and worker safety.

16th Ave Bridge over Cedar River
Upcoming work includes installing deck drain extension pipes under the bridge deck, utilizing a specialized vehicle to do so. Once this begins, the bridge will be fully closed to vehicular traffic, with the same detours in place as when the deck repairs were taking place. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic is currently being evaluated to determine if if can be safely maintained during work on the deck drains. One week's notice will be provided for this bridge closure.

Center Point Road NE from Lincoln Ave to J Ave Construction Update | June 14th
This project is heading into the final stages of work, with the majority of the storm sewer work complete and preparation for new roadway paving beginning. Paving is scheduled to begin the week of June 17th, weather permitting. Construction of driveways and sidewalk will follow.

Current Traffic Impacts

  • Center Point Road is closed from north of H Ave thru J Ave, including the intersection at I Ave
  • This area will remain closed the duration of the project.

Roadway Improvements to Begin Tuesday

5th Avenue SW Closure between 1st Street & 2nd Street
Effective Tuesday, May 28, 5th Avenue SW will be closed between 1st Street and 2nd Street as roadway improvements begin. Additionally, alley access from 5th Avenue will not be permitted. Improvements include replacing curbs and minor concrete patching, followed by an asphalt overlay. Work is expected to take approximately two (2) months, weather permitting. 30th Street SE Closure between Bever Avenue & Mansfield Avenue
Effective Tuesday, May 28, 30th Street SE will be closed between Bever Avenue and Mansfield Avenue as roadway improvements begin. Improvements include installing curbs and minor concrete patching, followed by an asphalt overlay. Work is expected to take approximately two (2) months, weather permitting. Zika Avenue NW Closure between 20th Street & Ellis Park North Entrance
Effective Tuesday, May 28, Zika Avenue NW will be closed from 20th Street to 18th Street for approximately two (2) weeks for prep work for roadway improvements. Once the prep work is completed, the closure will be extended for the installation of an asphalt overlay from 20th Street to the north entrance of Ellis Park, which will take up to two (2) weeks. Access to Ellis Park will be maintained off of Ellis Boulevard during the closure. Click HERE for additional details.

Crestwood Drive Construction Project Launches Monday, May 20
Aiming to improve both the roadway and storm water drainage, Crestwood Drive NW will be closed in stages from Wiley Boulevard to Edgewood Road beginning Monday, May 20.

Construction is scheduled to occur in five stages, starting at Edgewood Road and ending at Wiley Boulevard.

In addition to storm sewer upgrades, the project features roadway removal and replacement, as well as pedestrian improvements that are in line with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The new sidewalk will be from Westgate Drive NW to 38th Street NW on the north side of Crestwood Drive.

The full project should be completed by the end of October 2024.

Walford Road SW Closed to Thru-Traffic Beginning Monday
Beginning Monday, March 25, 2024, Walford Road SW will be closed to through traffic between 6th Street and Earhart Lane for the installation of new pavement, and water main and storm sewer improvements. Access to properties will be maintained during the closure. Work is expected to last until approximately mid-June.

Center Point Road NE Closure from H Avenue to J Avenue
Effective Thursday, March 7, Center Point Road NE will be closed to thru-traffic from H Avenue to J Avenue while utility and roadway improvements are underway. This includes the full closure of the intersections at I Avenue and J Avenue. The intersection at H Avenue will remain open. Detours will be posted for through traffic. This closure is expected to be in effect through mid-summer. View project updates.

1st Street NE Reduced to One Lane Between B Avenue and 1st Avenue E

Effective Wednesday, November 29th, southbound traffic on 1st Street NE will be reduced to one lane between B Avenue and 1st Avenue E for construction of Flood Control System (FCS) infrastructure. Work is expected to last until the spring of 2025.

FCS construction in this area will better protect the City from a flooding event and includes a pump station between the Tree of Five Seasons sculpture and I-380, a new flood wall from 1st Avenue to I-380, and three flood gates located at E and F Avenue (under I-380) and 2nd Avenue SE.
