Follow Tallahassee Fire Department Firework Safety Tips This Fourth of July

The Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) is fully committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. As we approach the Fourth of July, a time of celebration and patriotism, TFD reminds residents to practice firework safety to help prevent accidents and injuries.

Every year, many preventable incidents occur due to improper use of fireworks, causing harm to individuals, damage to property and even devastating fires. Fireworks are responsible for over 19,500 reported fires annually. Among the fireworks-related injuries treated in emergency rooms, approximately half are related to extremities, specifically the hand, finger or leg. About one-third of the injuries affect the eye or other parts of the head. To help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday, TFD strongly encourages following firework safety guidelines:

• Leave it to the professionals: Whenever possible, attend public firework displays organized by licensed professionals, like the City of Tallahassee's Celebrate America event at Tom Brown Park. Professional displays offer a spectacular show while eliminating the need for personal handling of fireworks.
• Obey local laws and regulations: Familiarize yourself with the fireworks laws and regulations in your area. Understand what types of fireworks are legal, where and when they can be used and any specific safety requirements.
• Purchase fireworks from reputable sources: Only buy fireworks from reliable vendors licensed by the appropriate authorities. Do not attempt to make homemade fireworks, as they are highly dangerous and illegal.
• Read and follow instructions: Carefully read and follow the instructions provided with the fireworks. Pay close attention to the recommended safety distances and procedures for lighting and handling each type of firework.
• Choose a safe location: Select an open and outdoor area away from buildings, dry vegetation and any flammable materials.
• Have a water source: Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of emergencies.
• Supervise children and pets: Children should never handle fireworks. Always keep a close eye on children and ensure they are at a safe distance from any fireworks. Additionally, keep pets indoors or in a secure location to prevent them from getting frightened or injured.
• Use protective gear: Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from sparks or debris while lighting fireworks.
• Dispose of fireworks safely: After the fireworks have completely burned out, soak them with water before discarding them in a designated metal container. Never dispose of fireworks in regular trash bins.

In the event of a fire or firework-related emergency, dial 9-1-1 immediately and provide accurate information to the dispatcher. Remember, safety should always be the top priority, and it is better to leave the handling of fireworks to professionals.
