Back to School Safety Tips for Students and Drivers

As Beavercreek City Schools begin their academic year, the Beavercreek Police Department is reminding students, parents, and drivers to stay vigilant with these essential back-to-school safety tips.

School Bus Safety Tips

For children riding the bus, parents should teach them the following:

  • Arrive at the bus stop early and avoid running.
  • Stay out of the street and refrain from horseplay while waiting.
  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching.
  • Cross the street only when signaled by the bus driver, and always look both ways for traffic.
  • Cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you.
  • Remain seated once the bus is moving and keep arms and head inside.
  • Avoid distracting the driver and only get off at your assigned stop.

Walking Safety

When walking to school:

  • Teach children to follow traffic signals, signs, and obey crossing guards.
  • Plan and practice a safe walking route, using streets with sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible.
  • Encourage walking with friends or in groups.
  • Discuss what to do if approached by strangers.
  • Ensure children are aware of their address and parents' phone numbers.

Driving Safety

Drivers are urged to:

  • Slow down to 20 miles per hour or less in school zones.
  • Remain alert for children near streets or in crosswalks.
  • Do not pass a bus with flashing lights. On two- or three-lane roads, stop for buses on both sides. On roads with four or more lanes, only stop if traveling in the same direction as the bus.
  • Avoid distractions, including using your phone while driving.
  • Drop off children at designated locations to avoid obstructing traffic and ensure safety.

Pedestrian and Biker Safety

Pedestrians and cyclists should:

  • Use crosswalks and always look both ways before crossing, even if there is a walk signal.
  • Wear bright colors when walking in low-light conditions to increase visibility.

By following these guidelines, we can ensure a safer school year for everyone!
