Independence Day Safety

The Phoenix Police Department would like to remind the community to enjoy Independence Day celebrations but to do it safely.

Fireworks

Arizona Revised Statutes section 36-1606 regulates when permissible fireworks can be bought, sold and used in Arizona.

This year, fireworks can be used June 24-July 24.

Permissible fireworks include cylindrical and cone fountains, illuminating torches, wheels, ground spinners, flitter sparklers, toy smoke devices, wire sparklers or dip sticks.

Shannon's Law

Remember, what goes up must come down. In Arizona, firing celebratory gunshots into the air is a Class 6 felony (ARS 13-3107), and can land you in prison.

The law became known as "Shannon's Law" after Shannon Smith was killed by a stray bullet in Central Phoenix 25 years ago.

Traffic Enforcement

Don't drink and drive. Traffic enforcement will be out looking for those who are driving under the influence. Have a designated driver or use a ride share.

Personal Safety Tips

  • Be mindful of your surroundings
  • Lock vehicles and take or hide valuables
  • Make a note of where you parked your vehicle
  • See something, say something

Please remember to be responsible while celebrating Independence Day.
