Greetings,

It's hard to believe August is already upon us. Extreme heat indexes and soaring humidity have become regular occurrences, bringing a greater risk for heat-related illnesses. This summer, it's important to be proactive by staying hydrated and avoiding the outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, if possible. Orange County has partnered with the library system, community centers and local homeless shelters to help residents stay cool while out and about in Orange County. You can find more heat safety tips in this month's newsletter.

In addition to the sweltering heat, parents, teachers and students are preparing for the start of a new school year. I encourage you to take full advantage of Florida's 2024 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday now through August 11. This is a great opportunity to save money on eligible supplies, clothing and electronics tax-free.

Finally, as administrators, educators, crossing guards and bus drivers welcome our students back to Orange County Public Schools on August 12, I encourage everyone to slow down and be mindful while driving in and around school zones. Children are our most precious resource.

Sincerely,

Jerry L. Demings
Orange County Mayor
