Physical campuses across the Washington State University system will go into a period of reduced operations to end the 2024 calendar year.
The 2024-2025 reduced operations schedule begins Monday, Dec. 23 and extends through Jan. 1, 2025. Three of those days - Dec. 24-25 and Jan. 1 - are paid university holidays for classified staff, annual faculty, administrative and professional employees.
Campuses are expected to resume normal operations Jan. 2, 2025.
Employees are encouraged to work with their managers to determine necessary staffing levels during the period of reduced operations. Those who won't be working during this time can use annual leave, a personal holiday or accrued compensatory leave to cover days outside of the university holidays.
Employees without sufficient leave may request personal leave without pay in keeping with the guidelines of their department. Members of the university community covered by a collective bargaining agreement should follow that contract concerning holiday and leave procedures.
Managers are asked to be flexible with leave requests and to coordinate with employees who are working during reduced operations on issues such as schedules and work tasks.
Faculty will be able to access their offices and laboratory spaces during December Holiday Reduced Operations, though they may find thermostats turned down to reduced utility costs. Facilities Services will also not be able to unlock buildings during this time.
Human Resource Services has put together a website with more information about the reduced operations period, including a list of frequently asked questions and answers.
