Monmouth County to conduct mosquito control
operation in Long Branch on Sept. 20

LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced that due to evidence of West Nile virus, a mosquito control operation targeting adult mosquitoes will take place in Long Branch from 4:30-6:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, weather permitting.

"The Mosquito Control Division will conduct an adult mosquito control operation in a treatment area that will run from Atlantic Avenue north to the Long Branch border with Monmouth Beach and west from Neptune Avenue to the Long Branch border with Oceanport," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. "Residents can help 'Fight the Bite' by using the Mosquito Control checklistto find and eliminate all the places where mosquitos breed around homes and other structures."

During the treatment operation, officials will be using Duet applied with truck-mounted Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) equipment.

"The peak season for mosquito-borne disease (West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis) is mid-August to mid-September so the Division advises all residents to protect themselves with repellent and/or to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors," said Commissioner Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the Mosquito Control Division. "The County offers courtesy inspections where an inspector can visit your property to look for standing water sources that support mosquito larvae. Pyrethroids have been recommended for Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) mosquito control in New Jersey by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's current evaluation considers pyrethroid-containing products to be slightly toxic with minimal potential risk to people when used properly as part of an integrated mosquito control program.
