Use of Frontex firearms and ammunition

Use of Frontex firearms and ammunition

26.7.2024

Question for written answer E-001433/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Per Clausen (The Left)

When Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, first purchased 2,500 semi-automatic pistols, along with more than 3 million pieces of 'full metal jacket' ammunition and 650,000 'expansion' rounds, it caused concern and led to stories in the press, both inside and outside the EU[1]. Since then, there has been very little news about the controversial firearms and ammunition purchases. However, the potential use of deadly force by the authorities should always be subject to scrutiny.

Would the Commission therefore kindly answer the following questions:

  • 1.Of the more than 3.5 million rounds of ammunition that were purchased for the 2,500 Frontex service pistols, how many rounds (of each kind of ammunition) have been fired so far?
  • 2.When and where have the weapons in question been fired?
  • 3.How many investigations into the correct use of firearms by Frontex or Frontex-associated personnel have so far been instigated?
