Crapo, Booker Recognize September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Washington, D.C.--U.S. Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) introduced a Senate Resolution recognizing September as "National Prostate Awareness Month."

Crapo and Booker authored the bipartisan resolution aimed at increasing awareness of prostate cancer. By recognizing this month as "National Prostate Awareness Month," the Resolution also encourages all Americans to take part in efforts to increase early detection, improve treatment and discover a cure for the disease.

"I hope all men will educate themselves about prostate cancer," said Crapo. "Early detection through regular health screenings is imperative to address this disease early when treatment will be most effective. This Resolution should serve as a reminder to all men to discuss screening options with their health care provider."

"With 1 in 8 men in the United States being diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, we must prioritize awareness, early detection, and research," said Booker. "I am proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution alongside Senator Crapo to designate September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. This is a critical issue affecting men across our nation, and we must improve access to health care services for detecting and treating prostate cancer."

"A man dies from prostate cancer every 15 minutes in the United States. Awareness is the first step to helping men understand their risks for prostate cancer and talk with their doctor about screening," said Courtney Bugler, CEO of ZERO Prostate Cancer. "We are grateful to Senator Crapo and Senator Booker for their leadership in Congress to be sure people have the information and access to screening necessary to catch prostate cancer early and live full, happy, and longer lives."

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States. One in eight men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes, and one in 44 men in the United States will die from prostate cancer. Idaho ranks ninth in the nation for prostate cancer deaths.

Joining Crapo and Booker in introducing this resolution are Senators James Risch (R-Idaho), Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland), Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia), George Helmy (D-New Jersey) and Ben Cardin (D-Maryland).
