Statement on the Prevention of an Introductory Meeting of the National Youth Conference in Aden

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the National Youth Conference preparatory committee call on the Southern Transitional Council (STC) to refrain from further hindering the legitimate activities of Yemen civil society and registered international organizations.

On Thursday, August 15, an introductory meeting of the National Youth Conference was organized completely independent of any political agendas or entities in partnership with the National Youth Conference Preparatory Committee, NDI and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Institute followed the standard practice in place in Aden by informing government authorities.. Invited participants included heads of youth organizations, civil society actors, and guests from various state institutions, international organizations operating in Yemen, and the UN envoy's office in Aden. On the morning of the event, the venue canceled the event at the request of a security official and participants were turned away.

NDI and the preparatory committee of the national youth conference express their deep concern over arbitrary actions in Aden that hinder the efforts of civil society, political parties, and international organizations and call on the STC and Republic of Yemen Government to ensure that Aden is a safe and welcoming location for civil society, cultural and social events.

بيان حول منع لقاء تعريفي للمؤتمر الوطني للشباب في عدن

يدعو المعهد الديمقراطي الوطني (NDI) واللجنة التحضيرية للمؤتمر الوطني للشباب المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي (STC) إلى عدم إعاقة الأنشطة المشروعة للمجتمع المدني اليمني والمنظمات الدولية المسجلة والمرخص لها من قبل الحكومة اليمنية.

في يوم الخميس الموافق 15 أغسطس 2024، نظمت اللجنة التحضيرية للمؤتمر الوطني للشباب لقاءً تعريفياً بالمؤتمر بشراكة مع المعهد الديمقراطي الوطني (NDI) والوكالة الأمريكية للتنمية الدولية (USAID) . وقد تم تنظيم هذه الفعالية بشكل مستقل تمامًا عن أي أجندات أو كيانات سياسية. حيث تم العمل بالإجراءات المتبعة في تنظيم مثل هذه الفعاليات وذلك بالتخاطب مع وزارة التخطيط والسلطات المعنية. وقد تضمنت الفعالية دعوة المشاركين بما فيهم رؤساء منظمات شبابية، ونشطاء المجتمع المدني، وضيوف من مختلف المؤسسات الحكومية، والمنظمات الدولية العاملة في اليمن، ومكتب المبعوث الأممي في عدن. وفي صباح يوم الفعالية، تم الغائها بناء على طلب من مسؤول أمني وتم منع المشاركين من الدخول.

يعرب المعهد الديمقراطي الوطني واللجنة التحضيرية للمؤتمر عن قلقهما العميق إزاء الإجراءات التعسفية في عدن التي تعرقل جهود المجتمع المدني والأحزاب السياسية والمنظمات الدولية، ويدعوان المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي وحكومة الجمهورية اليمنية لضمان أن تكون عدن مكانًا آمنًا ومرحبًا للمجتمع المدني والفعاليات الثقافية والاجتماعية.
