Government developing plan for a Provincial Food Waste Reduction Strategy

The Province is taking the preliminary steps of reviewing food waste across the Island and the impacts it can have on our communities and the environment.

As PEI continues to cement itself as a leading food provider for residents of the province, across Canada and the world, Government is launching the development of a Provincial Food Waste Reduction Strategy to identify and help address the challenges from food waste.

"As Islanders, we are proud to live on Canada's Food Island but as food insecurity levels and other related challenges continue to increase, we feel it is necessary to try and put forward a plan that helps to address the situation and identify supports for our residents. I encourage all Islanders to participate in the survey we are launching so that we can incorporate as many opinions as possible."

- Deputy Premier and Agriculture Minister Bloyce Thompson

The first phase of the development of the Provincial Food Waste Reduction Strategy is a broad public consultation to gather information, thoughts and concerns on food waste in the province. Islanders are invited to participate in filling out the survey on the website. The survey will remain open to the public until August 14, 2024.

The launch of this survey and the development of a Provincial Food Waste Reduction Strategy is a result of a mandate commitment to further benefit Islanders and will aim to provide a roadmap for PEI to address food waste.
