Dr. Amy Newman, assistant professor in the College of Nursing, was named president-elect of the Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Nurses.

"I'm honored to be serving in this leadership role alongside so many respected, accomplished nurse-leaders," Newman said. "APHON has advanced care standards and outcomes for children, adolescents and young adults battling blood disorders and cancers for more than 50 years. Carrying on this important work is of utmost importance to the profession and patients."

Newman's program of research aims to enhance communication among pediatric and adolescent patients with life-threatening illnesses, their family members, and health care clinicians, particularly discussions around goals of care, values, and care preferences. Newman is specifically interested in leveraging the role of the nurse to engage in more collaborative relationships with physicians and other members of the health care team to ensure the communication needs of patients and families are met throughout the illness trajectory.

Newman has been a pediatric oncology nurse for over 25 years and joined the Marquette faculty in 2019.
