As a follow-up to earlier meetings, representatives from the City of Del Mar met with the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar this month to discuss noise impacts from military aircraft.
Councilmember Tracy Martinez, Assistant City Manager Clem Brown and Marine Corps Col. R. Erik Herrmann reviewed progress on the development of a guidebook to reinforce rules for rotary aircraft flights between the base at Miramar, Naval Air Station North Island and Camp Pendleton.
Local military leaders are preparing a "combined course rules guidebook" for every pilot, including those from transient squads that visit the local installations to train. Military leadership expects a briefing on the development and roll out of the guidebook in January.
The City will also engage the leadership at Naval Air Station North Island to discuss fly overs and noise from naval aircraft.
Since July, Miramar reports having received 15 noise complaints from Del Mar residents.
According to Miramar leaders, the "beach route" sends rotary aircraft west-northwest over Los Peñasquitos Lagoon before turning them north about one mile out to sea. Some pilots, however, cut the corner and fly close to homes in Del Mar.
The Miramar base is located about 12 miles southeast of the City and, on average, runs 67,000 flight operations per year. It is home to 116 rotary wing or tilt-rotor aircraft and 105 fixed-wing planes.
Residents can file noise complaints to Miramar online or by calling 858-307-4277.
