In the News: Buffalo State’s Move-In Day Featured on WIVB

Buffalo State University's Move-In Day was featured on WIVB-TV 4 on Wednesday, August 21, as the university welcomed more than 700 new resident students from near and far.

The WIVB segment, "New Students Feel Mixed Emotions on Buffalo State Move-In Day," by Hope Winter, interviewed Interim President Bonita R. Durand, Ph.D.; Wayne Brumfield; interim vice president for student affairs; and Jennifer Segura Lopez, Buffalo State senior and community assistant, all of whom were on hand to help students and families navigate the many emotions that come with move-in day.

"We encourage our students to reach out to anybody they see," Durand said. "I encourage my faculty and staff not to pass a student that looks like they may be having some trouble without stopping to find out what's going on. That's the family atmosphere that we have here."

"You'll actually find a lot of home with our friends, oddly enough," said Lopez. "You're practically living with your friends, and it's a great thing."

Once students are moved in, Brumfield said, they can begin getting involved in the campus community.

"We're really excited about their opportunity coming on campus and getting engaged and involved in Buffalo State University," he said. "We're going to be working with those students all semester long, engaging them and encouraging them and helping them with this transition from high school to college."

There is no shortage of ways to get involved-Buffalo State has more than 50 student organizations, a plethora of events and activities, and ongoing community partnerships.

Incoming students said they are both anxious and eager to begin their time as Bengals.

"I'm very nervous, but I'm also very excited," said Amy Guirguis, a first-year Buffalo State student from Brooklyn. "I get to finally move into my dorm. I've been having a countdown for this. I'm very excited."

"A lot of emotions going on," said Prince Defreitas, a first-year student from the Bronx. "I'm nervous but I'm also happy. I'm nervous because it's going to be my first time away from home. But other than that, I'm still happy because I'll be away from home to be able to experience being on my own, being independent for once."

Classes for Buffalo State's fall semester begin Monday, August 26.
