ALERT: Water Main Leak and Intersection Closure at Alvarado-Niles Road and Central Avenue

A water main leak occurred at the intersection of Alvarado-Niles Road and Central Avenue earlier today around 11:40 AM. The cause of the leak was from work being performed by a contractor for an electric/gas utility company. As a result, the Alvarado-Niles Road and Central Avenue intersection is closed, and the public is asked to avoid the area until further notice. Detours can be expected, in both directions, down Dowe Avenue/Alvarado-Niles Road and Western Avenue/Alvarado-Niles Road.

The City of Union City and Alameda County Water District (ACWD) are working closely together to address the damage. The leak is isolated and emergency repairs are underway. The repair work may take several hours to complete before traffic can safely be restored. Noise impacts can also be expected while repair work is being performed.

Customers may experience discolored water while repairs take place. This is caused by sediment due to pressure changes. The quality of the water still meets or surpasses state and federal drinking water standards. For information on how to flush your line, visit ACWD's website at: FAQs • Discolored Water FAQs. Customers with questions about water service or quality can also contact ACWD at (510) 668-6500.

The City will be posting regular updates on its website at: https://www.unioncity.org/news, Nextdoor, and via its social media channels (Facebook: @CityOfUnionCity and Instagram & X/Twitter: @UnionCityCA_Gov). Community members are also encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts through Nixle.

The community's patience is much appreciated as every effort is made to quickly conduct repairs and minimize traffic disruptions in the area.
