Police investigate fatal shooting

August 10, 2024, Canton, MI - The Canton Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred in a residential neighborhood earlier today, resulting in the death of a 35 year-old male.

At approximately 11:48 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Cornell Street, for reports of shots fired following a brief confrontation by the suspect toward the victim-both residents of the neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound in the street. Officers immediately moved the victim to a safe location to receive medical assistance from the Canton Firefighter/Paramedics.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Immediately following the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside his home. After issuing multiple commands, officers successfully engaged the suspect who ultimately surrendered into police custody. The suspect remains locked-up pending a full investigation. At that time, the case will be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review of charges.

"This was a senseless act of violence toward the victim," said Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh. "The Canton Police Department sends our deepest condolences to the victim's family, and to the neighbors who may have witnessed this tragic event."

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time pending family notifications.
