26 July 2024

The toilet block at the newly upgraded Glow Worm Tunnel precinct has been damaged by vandals.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) said it was disappointing to see facilities needed and appreciated by the visiting public senselessly damaged.

During the week vandals kicked in the door of the accessible toilet, breaking the locking mechanism. There was an also an attempt to remove the support handle from the wall.

The sign was also ripped off the door of the second toilet.

The incident has been reported to police.

NPWS is making repairs to the facility today to ensure the toilet block is available for weekend visitors.

The toilet block was recently built as part of a $4.3 million upgrade for the popular precinct.

The Glow Worm Tunnel precinct remains open however all visitors should check the alerts notifications on the NPWS website before visiting for the latest information.

Quotes attributable to NPWS Blue Mountains Branch Director David Crust:

'Up to 50,000 visitors a year come to Wollemi National Park to view the glow-worms.

'This toilet block is an important facility for our visitors, many of whom travel a long way to enjoy Wollemi National Park.

'We are very disappointed that this new facility has been damaged by thoughtless vandals.'
