Bowie State Hosts Bulldog Summer Series Luncheons

Themed Events Helped Build Staff Camaraderie

(BOWIE, Md.) - Summer fun normally conjures visions of students living their best lives with no concern for grades or exams, but what about the staff that continues to make the university hum from commencement to the first day of fall classes?

Thanks to the university's commitment to building community, Bowie State staff were able, for a bit, to leave their cares in the office during the Bulldog Summer Series. The series of themed group lunch events held on the third Thursday of every month during the summer invited staff to leave their desks and join their colleagues for fun and fellowship. Each communal gathering centered on a variety of different foods and activities.

"At Bowie State, we strive to make every member of the campus community feel like they're part of the Bulldog family," said Bowie State President Aminta Breaux. "Creating spaces where colleagues and come together and fellowship with one another is vital in creating those bonds."

The Bulldog Summer Series kicked off in June with soul food serving as the backdrop for "Bowie Beats: An Appreciation of African American Music." Other music-themed activities, such as karaoke, dancing and presentations, were spread throughout the Fine and Performing Arts Center and engaged the attendees creatively while they mixed and mingled.

July saw the campus experience some Caribbean flair with "Bulldogs in the Tropics." Plantains, jerk chicken and beef patties were among the island fare that was served while a steel drum band performance and double Dutch competition entertained the crowd.

Finally, August saw the campus adopt the "Bowie Family Reunion" theme, as hamburgers, hotdogs and crabs were served in a picnic-style lunch that spanned both the indoor and outdoor areas of the Student Center. A live band also performed in the Student Center lobby helping to set the tone of liveliness and high spirits that the campus hopes to infuse into incoming freshmen and returning students as everyone prepares for the start of fall classes.
