Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Skelmersdale's Christmas light Switch-on event sparked the festive season to life in West Lancashire and proved to be a real cracker for all ages.

The town's family-friendly event took place on Sunday, November 17 and saw the Mayor of West Lancashire, Councillor Julian Finch, flick the famous festive switch and start the countdown to Christmas.

Hundreds packed into Southway to enjoy live entertainment from a range of artists and acts including Onyx Dance Academy, Skelmersdale Brass Band and the Ravenous rock band.

As the crowds waited in anticipation for the glow of colourful Christmas lights, they enjoyed roaming street performances from the Bread & Butter Theatre Company, funfair rides, food & drink stalls, Monster Munch characters and everyone's favourite seasonal green grump, The Grinch.

The main stage was sponsored by Tawd Valley Developments.

Next, attention turns to Ormskirk, with the town's switch-on event set for Sunday, November 24, with The Mayor once again given the honour of illuminating the lights.

Councillor Vickie Cummins, lead member for Communities, said: "We're delighted to bring a duo of switch-on extravaganzas to the people of West Lancashire.

"These free family fun events are the ideal way to bring some festive magic to the Borough. We're expecting thousands to share in the joy of Christmas as we bring all corners of our communities together.

"They showcase some of the amazing talent and entertainment available on our doorstep and also bring a deserved boost to our local and independent businesses."

Timings for both events:

Start: 11am

Switch-on: 5pm

Event close: 6pm

Huge crowds are expected to gather under the famous Clocktower once again, to witness the return of the Christmas lights that illuminate the town.

The main stage will return for the annual event with a range of live performances, while Yule be sorry to miss entertainment from the Ormskirk School singers and Showbiz Performing Arts Academy youngsters.

Look out for roaming street acts bringing festive fun, artisan food & drink stalls, a licensed bar and fairground rides on Aughton Street and Church Street.

Also, the Christmas Tree Festival up at Ormskirk Parish Church is not to be missed, with live singers serenading visitors and the historic building's exterior illuminated beautifully to coincide with the switch-on.
