First meeting of the Future Defense Science and Technology Policy Council held

The meeting was jointly organized by the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Science and ICT

Four major implementation tasks were discussed

The Defense Ministry and Ministry of Science and ICT agreed to strengthen convergence and joint efforts between science and technology and the defense sector to promote innovation in defense science and technology and build a strong, advanced military.

Defense Minister Shin Won Sik and Minster of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho co-hosted the first Future Defense Science and Technology Policy Council at conference room in the Defense Ministry in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on July 17.

The two ministries signed a business agreement on April 1 to build an advanced and powerful military to prepare for the future warfare environment amid digital innovation in science and technology, and have held sectoral working-level consultations and discussed details of cooperation.

The Council discussed four main strategies and key implementation tasks based on the cooperation methods identified so far, and agreed to establish a close cooperation system. The four main strategies include: strengthening private sector-military R&D collaboration in defense science and technology; rapid validation and deployment of private sector technology; cultivating talent in future defense and science and technology; and consolidating a system of cooperation between government ministries and research institutions.

Minister Shin said, "The Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Science and ICT will accelerate the implementation of a strong military based on AI, science and technology through cooperation in various fields. With the combined efforts of the two ministries, we will create a virtuous circle between the national security and technology development sectors and further strengthen defense science and technology capabilities."

Minister Lee said, "With the increasing impact of drones, AI and robotics technologies on the battlefield, both ministries will accelerate comprehensive technology cooperation, validation, personnel training and exchanges through the policy consultative council to promote the development of science and technology and ICT and foster an advanced and strong military."

The two ministries intend to strengthen cooperation with the Future Defense Science and Technology Policy Council to promote the digital transformation of science and technology and a strong, advanced military.
