Nov. 20 | Storm Update

Nov. 20, 2024 | Storm Update

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services (OES) encourages residents to continue preparing themselves for storm impacts throughout the week. At this time, the county has experienced several storm related impacts such as regional power outages, fallen trees and minor impacts to our roadways. As this storm progresses through this week, conditions will continue to be monitored in close coordination with other local agencies and partners.

OES has activated the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to provide for public information, impact assessment, situational awareness related to the storm. The Weather Service predicts more rain over the next few days, and the Sheriff's Office is urging our community to continue to prepare for potential impacts.

Be Prepared

Additional rain in the forecast is expected to bring risk of downed trees, potential minor flooding in low-lying areas, creeks and streams, power outages and potential road blockages. For emergency preparedness tips and resources, please visit humboldtgov.org/prepare.

Before traveling, please review the Cal Trans Quickmap to check road conditions along your planned route.

Generators can be a great backup during a power outage, but it's crucial to use them safely to prevent risks like carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. For your safety, remember to:

  • NEVER run generators indoors!
  • Place them at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and garages.
  • Refuel only when the generator is cool. Fuel spilled on a hot engine can ignite.
  • CO is a colorless, odorless gas. Install CO detectors on every level of your home to keep your family and pets safe.
  • Avoid electrical shock by keeping generators dry and out of the rain.
  • Use only heavy-duty extension cords for connecting appliances.
  • Follow all manufacturer instructions for safe use.

Be Cautious of Downed Power Lines

If you encounter a downed power line, call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY to report its location and then PG&E at 1-800-743-5002. Be sure to stay at least 35 feet away and wait for help to arrive. NEVER touch a downed power line or go near one. Here are some more safety tips if you come across a downed power line:

  • Keep others and pets away.
  • You cannot tell whether a power line is energized just by looking at it, so consider all downed power lines live and dangerous.
  • Do not drive over a fallen power line.
  • Stay away from flooded areas and downed trees during and after a storm. These areas could be hiding an energized power line.
