Prefabricated interim passenger corridors are being installed to facilitate passenger safety and comfort.

Turner, along with design-build partners Gensler and TEF, is proud to announce the groundbreaking of the Terminal 3 West Modernization project at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Turner will lead the $2.6 billion transformation of the terminal which will result in a modern, world-class facility. This project is set to redefine the passenger experience with a focus on comfort, efficiency, and sustainability.

The project includes a 200,000 square foot expansion of Terminal 3, 650,000 square feet of renovation, and a new six-story building that will house airline lounges and operational office space.

As part of the modernization project, Turner is constructing temporary corridors to reroute passengers safely around the construction zone. This "one and done" process was planned to reduce the complexities of multiple moves of the corridors over the project's duration. The 1,000-foot West Corridor and 400-foot East Corridor were fabricated as 11 modules at a nearby air cargo yard to avoid disruption to travelers. Following technical and thoughtful planning which sought to minimize impact on airport operations and travelers, the modules were transported across the airfield over 11 consecutive nights, as seen here.

The Terminal 3 West Modernization will introduce cutting-edge amenities, expanded concessions, and enhanced security features. Passengers will benefit from a redesigned check-in area, improved baggage handling systems, and a more intuitive wayfinding experience. The modernization also includes the installation of advanced technology systems aimed at streamlining airport operations and enhancing passenger flow.

"This project represents not only a significant investment in the future of air travel but also in our commitment to building sustainably," said Tina Smith, Construction Executive at Turner, "Our team is dedicated to creating a terminal that not only meets the highest standards of efficiency and comfort but also serves as a model for environmental stewardship in the aviation industry."

A significant aspect of this project is its commitment to sustainability. The terminal will incorporate energy-efficient systems, water-saving fixtures, and materials sourced from sustainable suppliers. The project aims to achieve LEED Platinum certification, demonstrating SFO's dedication to environmental responsibility.

"This groundbreaking marks a milestone in our longstanding partnership with SFO," said Nino Adamo, Turner's Vice President & General Manager, "this project is an opportunity to showcase our expertise in delivering large-scale, complex projects that align with our values of innovation, quality, and sustainability. Our relationship with SFO has been built on trust and collaboration, and we are excited to continue this journey together as we transform Terminal 3 West into a state-of-the-art facility."

The expansion portion of the project is scheduled to open in the fall of 2027, with eastern addition side of Terminal 3 opening in 2029.
