Portland, Ore. (Nov. 4) - Following a record-setting effort in her Alaska Anchorage debut, senior Emilia Long was named Monday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for women's basketball by the league office.
A 5-9 point guard from Port Angeles, Wash., Long averaged 17.5 points, 7.0 assists and 7.0 steals as the Seawolves cruised to wins over NAIA foe Simpson (Calif.) in the season openers at the Alaska Airlines Center. On Friday, the Cal Poly Humboldt transfer had 21 points (9-14 FG), six assists and broke UAA's 26-year-old school record with 11 steals, aiding nine total school records in a 103-24 rout. The 11 steals were also a GNAC record. In the rematch, Long collected 14 points (6-13 FG), eight assists and three steals in a 94-29 win.
"Millie has shown so much improvement in her short time with our program," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. "This is the first preseason she has had to focus on basketball, and it has really paid off. She made a lot of plays on both ends of the floor, but her defensive effort set the tone for our team and helped us to a strong start to our year."
