Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) released the following statement on the passing of the revered labor, humanitarian, and civil rights leader William Lucy:

"I am saddened to learn about the recent passing of William Lucy, one of the world's most respected and revered Black labor leaders. I want to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Bill for his lifetime of struggle and sacrifice that made it possible for my generation and future generations to come to live a life of dignity and untold potential. Truly, he stood among the most influential Black Americans to serve our community.

"William fought and worked for social justice and workers' freedoms across the globe. His leadership as president of Public Services International (PSI), his executive service on the AFL-CIO council, and his efforts within other organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) are true testaments to his lifetime of work as an activist and advocate for all laborers and the cause of social justice.

"Mr. Lucy led a full life of service and was blessed to make ninety trips around the sun. My prayers are with his family and all who loved him during this time of grief. May he rest in power and peace."
