Douglas Maliski of Seward Convicted for Possessing and Distributing Child Pornography

November 26, 2024

(Kenai, Alaska) - On Nov. 12, after a six-day trial, a Seward jury convicted 63-year-old Douglas Maliski of four felony counts related to the distribution and possession of child pornography over a several-year period.

Evidence at trial showed that in early 2019, Maliski downloaded multiple videos containing child pornography to his cell phone, to include children as young as ten. Those videos were discovered only after the Alaska Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a late 2020 report of child pornography distribution by Maliski from an online content moderator. Subsequent investigation in early 2021 confirmed that Maliski had received, saved, and then distributed a child pornography video depicting a six- to nine-year-old child. That investigation also located the earlier child pornography videos that Maliski had saved to his cell phone.

The jury convicted Maliski of one class B felony count of distribution of child pornography and three class C felony counts of possession of child pornography.

Presiding Superior Court Judge Lance Joanis scheduled Maliski's sentencing for March 21, 2025. Maliski faces a sentence of five to 15 years in jail for Distribution of Child Pornography and two to 12 years in jail for each count of Possession of Child Pornography.

This case was prosecuted by the Kenai District Attorney's Office. Seward Police Officer Morgan Woodard (he has since transferred to the Seward Fire Department) led the local investigation with considerable assistance from Detective Mark Thomas and forensic expert Brandon Hunter with the Anchorage Police Department Cyber Crimes Unit.
