Title: Chy ty proholosuvav proty "onovlenoho" moskovsʹkoho i︠a︡rma? [Чи ти проголосував проти "оновленого" московського ярма?]
Manufactured: [Ukraine], [1990?]
This Ukrainian propaganda poster features an image of the poet Taras Shevchenko, depicted pointing directly at the viewer in a stance reminiscent of the iconic "Uncle Sam" World War I recruitment posters. The text below, translated as "Did you vote against the renewed Moscow yoke?", urges opposition to Russian influence and highlights the importance of political action for Ukraine's independence and self-determination. The poster is designed to encourage the people of Ukraine to be politically engaged and vote for independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Hoover's vast collection of political posters is available within various archival collections, including the Poster Collection, and also as individually cataloged items separate from any collection, such as this particular poster.
Author: Vasiliĭ Ermolov
Title: T︠S︡arʹ i narod [Царь и народ]
Manufactured: S. -Peterburg, Tipografīi︠a︡ Uchilishcha glukhoni︠e︡mykh, 1906
Published in 1906, this book explores the traditional bonds between the Russian tsar and his people, drawing on examples from the empire's history to justify the tsar's authority following the 1905 Revolution. Ermolov argues that the Russo-Japanese War and an inefficient administrative structure, rather than the revolution itself, necessitated reforms and the creation of the State Duma. The author supports the view that the Duma should serve as an advisory body to the tsar, without legislative power.
Title: José Antonio Aponte : perspectivas interdisciplinarias
Published: [La Habana, Cuba], [Instituto Cubano de Investigación Cultural Juan Marinello], [2019]
This rare Cuban publication details the life and work of José Antonio Aponte, a free Black Cuban abolitionist, militia captain, artist, and carpenter. In 1812, Aponte led a major rebellion-known as Aponte's Rebellion-alongside other free Black and enslaved individuals, aiming to abolish slavery and overthrow Spanish colonial rule in Cuba. He organized a vast network of conspirators across the island, using his art and strategic planning to coordinate efforts. Though the rebellion was ultimately suppressed, and Aponte was publicly executed by hanging that same year, his actions are regarded as a significant precursor to later Cuban independence and abolitionist movements.
