Green Party of Canada Reaffirms Commitment to Peace, Calls for Stronger Action on Global Conflicts

OTTAWA - The Green Party of Canada reiterates its core commitment to peace and decries the rising tide of global conflict. As violent crises escalate in Ukraine, where North Korea has recently allied with Putin's forces, and as conflicts continue to spread in countries like Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran, the Green Party calls on Canada to return to its peacekeeping roots and urgently act as a force for peace on the world stage.

"The Green Party stands firmly on the side of peace," said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada. "Canada has long enjoyed a reputation as a peacekeeping nation, and it is high time we once again live up to that reputation. Our words must be backed by our actions-rejecting any involvement in or profit from global conflict, as we shift our focus to humanitarian aid. As we prepare to remember those who sacrificed in past wars, we must ensure those sacrifices were not in vain by committing wholeheartedly to peace and justice for all."

In light of the expanding global threats, the Green Party urges Canada to take decisive action to end military exports to all conflict zones, a call the Green Party has consistently championed. The Party calls for Canada to instead increase its focus on humanitarian assistance, helping rebuild war-torn regions and offering support to nations willing to pursue peace. Additionally, the Green Party emphasizes that Canada is uniquely positioned to lead by example, advocating for compassionate global policy as an alternative to retaliation and violence.

"Compassion has the power to quell violence, while revenge only perpetuates harm and suffering for everyone caught in conflict," added Elizabeth May. "True peace and coexistence are possible when the international community comes together to offer meaningful support, including a commitment to Indigenous Land Defenders here in Canada. We must set an example by supporting justice and sustainable development, both at home and abroad, while refusing to profit from violence."

As Canada approaches Remembrance Day, the Green Party reminds all Canadians of the importance of honouring our nation's history of peacekeeping and pledges to work toward a future where compassion, cooperation, and coexistence define Canada's role on the global stage.

"Canada must make a serious commitment to peace," concluded Elizabeth May. "When a peace proposal arises, such as the recent initiative of the Egyptian government, we should rush forward with vigour, backing initiatives that help the world move beyond conflict. This starts with refusing to fuel violence by ending arms sales and offering the humanitarian support so urgently needed around the world."

The Green Party of Canada remains steadfast in its mission to build a world where compassion replaces conflict, where peace reigns over profit, and where Canada leads by example as a true advocate for peace, environmental justice, and the protection of all people and our shared planet.
