New Staff Engineers Join R&M’s Engineering Department

Brandon Shayan, WAQTC and Katherine Sakeagak recently joined R&M as Staff Engineers in the firm's Engineering Department. In this role, Brandon and Katherine will assist with planning, design and development of surface transportation and airport infrastructure projects throughout Alaska.

Brandon started at R&M in 2022 as an Engineering Intern. In that role, he spent several summers working as a lab technician in R&M's materials laboratory, and as a materials technician and construction inspector for airport and highway improvement projects in Alaska. Brandon is now assisting with design of road, highway and trail projects as a part of R&M's Surface Transportation Group.

"The people and culture are why I enjoy working at R&M," said Brandon. "The people I work with are equally as brilliant as they are friendly. I can get direct help from a senior project engineer just as easily as a fellow staff engineer, while in the same day, chat with the CEO and VPs about our favorite cars and countries to visit. I never knew it was possible to fit into a workplace's culture so easily."

Brandon has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage and is a Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction Qualified in Aggregate, Concrete, Embankment and Base, Density and AK Sampling.

Katherine first joined R&M in 2023 as an Engineering Intern in our Airports Group. In this role, she gained valuable experience in developing airport layout plans, quality control processes, multi-discipline coordination and familiarity with FAA and DOT&PF design standards, and ASCE 7-22. Katherine recently rejoined R&M as a Staff Engineer in this same group where she assists in planning and design of airport engineering projects. Tasks include preliminary engineering and design development, including grading, profiles, typical and cross sections and civil details. Being an Alaska Native, Katherine is excited to work on rural Alaskan projects.

"I was excited to join R&M for the work culture and variety of projects the firm works on statewide! As a recent graduate, I've learned that enjoying who you work for and with is an important factor to me," said Katherine. "And because of the different markets R&M works in, I feel like I can dabble in each engineering design group as my engineering career starts."

Katherine has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Outside of work, she can be found indoor/outdoor rock climbing, or working on hand crafts like sewing and beading.
