Congressman Cohen Mourns the Loss of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

WASHINGTON - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) mourns the loss of his long-serving colleague Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away on the evening of July 19th, 2024.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I am saddened to learn of the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. We worked together for 18 years in the House Judiciary Committee, fighting for civil rights, women's rights, and democracy. I cosponsored her landmark Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which established Juneteenth as a federal holiday. I recall presiding over a hearing to consider another of her historic bills, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act. I also cosponsored this legislation which supported the creation of a commission to recommend remedies to slavery.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is the second coming of Barbara Jordan- another titan in American politics. I was fortunate to share time with this legendary lady. May she rest in peace."
