Press Release

On October 3, 2024, at approximately 9:52 p.m., troopers from SP Bath responded to a disturbance at the Kwik Fill on W. Morris Street in the village of Bath.

Upon arrival, troopers attempted to make contact with the suspect, who was operating a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The suspect, Daniel R. Sheldon, age 70, of Beaver Dams, NY, was driving around the parking lot, trying to strike persons with his vehicle. Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop when Sheldon failed to comply, and a pursuit was initiated, which started traveling westbound on State Route 415. Sheldon failed to negotiate the curve and exited the roadway, striking the guardrail near Spaulding Drive, subsequently causing the vehicle to enter the field adjacent to I-86 Nicholas Clark Bridge; the vehicle overturned and came to rest. Sheldon was Mercy Flighted to Strong Memorial Hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, the Bath Police Department, the Bath Fire Department, the Bath Ambulance, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Kanona Fire Department, and the Steuben County ALS.

This is an ongoing criminal investigation.
