Replace Wooden Noise Barriers on Route 72 East and Westbound in New Britain

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to replace the existing wooden noise barrier on Route 72 eastbound and westbound, between West Main Street (Route 555) and Corbin Avenue (Route 372. The guiderail adjacent to the noise barriers will also be upgraded under this project.

The project is included in a CTDOT's condition-based program, to replace wooden noise barriers that are beyond their useful life. The noise barrier will be replaced with a new noise barrier at the same location and dimensions. Since wooden noise barriers are no longer being installed because of their shorter design life and more extensive maintenance needs, the replacement noise barrier will be constructed of concrete or other materials that require less maintenance and have a longer design life. The replacement noise barriers will provide noise abatement in conformance with the criteria in place when the existing noise barrier was installed.

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in April 2025, with construction anticipated to start in the Fall of 2025, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding, and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with one hundred percent (100%) State funds.

It is CTDOT's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project's development. If anyone has any questions or comments on this project, please contact Michael Cherpak, Principal Engineer, at (860) 594-3155 or by e-mail at [email protected].
